About the course

This course offers a dive into common behaviors that challenge both individuals with dementia and their caregivers, equipping you with knowledge of the behavioral research in each area.

In the Course Introduction, we will introduce you to the course content, learning outcomes, and, of course, your instructor.

As we move into Working with Behaviour that Challenges, we will guide you through the various behaviors often seen in individuals with dementia that others may consider problematic. We’ll explore not only what these common behaviors are, but important considerations for intervening on these behaviors.

We'll explore function-based and non-function-based interventions for different behaviors, and the behavior-analytic research on each behavior.

One of the most common and difficult behaviors to manage in dementia care is Agitation and Aggression, and this section focuses on the behavior-analytic research that addresses these behaviors, as well as some considerations for intervention. We’ll focus on strategies for addressing agitation, aggression, and escape-maintained behaviors related to personal care. Additionally, we’ll examine gaps in the existing behavioral literature, giving you the opportunity to critically assess the current research in the field.

The Wandering and Exiting section tackles two of the most persistent challenges in caring for adults with dementia. We will introduce interventions that can help manage wandering and exiting behaviors, alongside a discussion of what’s missing in the behavioral literature regarding these interventions. We'll consider the ethical implications of intervening on these behaviors and considerations for doing so.

In the Hoarding section, we delve into hoarding behaviors and explore effective interventions. We also highlight areas that are lacking in the behavioral literature and considerations when being asked to intervene on hoarding behavior in an older adult.

The course also addresses important Other Considerations, such as restraint-free care and the shift from efficacy to effectiveness in behavioral interventions. We’ll discuss how to ensure that interventions are truly impactful and how they can diffuse over time for lasting positive outcomes.

You’ll leave the course with a deeper understanding of dementia-related behaviors and the practical tools needed to address them effectively in your practice.

Whether you're a behavior analyst working with other populations, a student in behavior analysis looking to expand your learning, or simply passionate about improving the lives of older adults, this course will equip you with the knowledge and information to understand how we support older adults with dementia who are engaging in common behavioral challenges.

What others are saying...

Pauline

"The structure of the course was very organized. I enjoyed that it focused on common problem behaviors and provided an example scenario for each one. The case studies and sample interventions were valuable. I also appreciate the use of language that promotes dignity and respect for the elderly. My husband who worked as a geriatric care nurse for over a decade was listening in and cheering on what you had to say. The material was a representation of actual challenges with practical solutions in elderly care settings."

Olivia

"The content was well-structured, insightful, and engaging, making complex concepts easy to grasp. Zoe demonstrated exceptional knowledge and passion, creating an encouraging and interactive learning environment. The variety of resources and practical examples provided made the material both relevant and applicable to real-world scenarios. Overall, this course has significantly broadened my understanding of the behavioural excesses experienced by PLWD. I highly recommend this course to anyone seeking to further understand the behaviour that challenges within the field of behavioural gerontology."

Kayla

"I absolutely loved this course! I thought that the behaviors were clearly defined in ABA terms as well as the research was fantastic to bring it back around to ABA. Great review of interventions, function vs non function based, and research."
